Cloister Gallery artist

Showing in May - Paintings by Margaret Ramberg

Margaret Ramberg uses a combination of aerial and satellite photography, paint, and a variety of materials (textiles, sawdust, wallpaper, etc.) to create abstract images intended to express simple truths. Margaret writes that even as a child she found art an important means of self-exploration and self-expression. "Growing up in a small community, I struggled in school and art was an escape. My journal contained drawings and thoughts that provided a gateway to myself, a self that in truth differed significantly from the role I played in my town. My art journal is still an important part of life, a way I express my feelings in words and through drawings."

One of Margaret's major goals in each of her works is "to create an atmosphere of space and color. The visual experience of paintings is what influences my technical approach. I look at a painting thinking in layers. Building layer upon layer gives lushness to the colors. Using glazes between layers of paint adds definition to the surface and creates a sense of elusiveness."

Margaret is a native of Kansas and currently serves on the Fine Arts faculty of Washburn University. In addition to the Cloister Gallery, Ramberg's art is also currently on display at Warehouse 414 (Topeka) and The Late Show (Kansas City). Examples of her work and further information are available on her website (www.margaretramberg.com).

The Cloister Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9-5, and on Sundays from 8:30-noon.
