Cloister Gallery artist for March

Recent work by Barbara Water Peters
Barbara Waterman Peters' current artwork at the Cathedral is laden with symbolism exploring women’s changing place in the world. This is some of her newer work showing a mystical, timeless environment that is vaguely unsettled, dark, or claustrophobic. The landscape is strictly Kansas, cloudy and often windswept, providing a mysterious element in her narrative paintings of a figurative nature. She has been working on this work for over a year and the viewer will need to interpret the roles, relationships and actions to solve the puzzle of the action in the meaning of this work.

The Cloister Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 9-5; and Saturday-Sunday, 8-noon.

Cathedral names new Youth Director

Caitlin Ballard has been named to oversee the Cathedral’s senior high and middle school youth programs. She replaces Michael Massey as Youth Director as he moves into a new position coordinating parish lay ministries.

Caitlin, 23, graduated from the University of Kansas in 2009. She currently works for United Way setting up community service programs for youth under the AmeriCorps VISTA program. She was head coach of the freshman girls basketball team at Blue Valley Northwest High School in 2008-09 where she coached her team to a 17-3 season. During her summers, Caitlin worked at a free basketball camp for kids in the Kansas City Metro Area. Caitlin was appointed by Governor Parkinson last October to serve on the Kansas Volunteer Commission.

Caitlin also attended the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth where she studied pastoral ministry and served as Confirmation Retreat Team Leader. Her faith background includes Catholic, Episcopal, and Congregational traditions.

Michael Massey takes on new role

Michael Massey has been appointed Ministry Coordinator by Dean Lipscomb, a new position designed to aid in building active and vibrant lay ministry opportunities for parishioners. The job involves monitoring and coordinating the work of existing ministries and committees within the parish as well as facilitating the development of new ministries and special projects.

In his twenty-five years as a member of Grace Cathedral, Michael has served in a variety of ministries, including the Parish Life and Outreach committees, Doorstep coordinator, acolyte and chalice bearer, Sunday School teacher, and Youth Director, as well as a number of Diocesan committees and volunteer positions.

Saturday Sack Lunch Program underway

Grace Cathedral began its Saturday lunch ministry on Jan. 10. We have five teams of volunteers (one for each week of the month) working every Saturday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Sack lunches consisting of 2 sandwiches, a bag of chips and 2 cookies are prepared and given to clients “to go.”

The Cathedral began this ministry to supplement a sack lunch program operated by Mater Dei Catholic Church Monday through Friday. The sack lunch program is the only downtown food program offered on Saturdays. First Methodist Church offers breakfast on Sunday morning, so now persons in need can receive at least one meal seven days a week. We feel blessed to be able to participate in this feeding ministry. We’re also happy to announce that our crews are currently completely filled. No more volunteers are needed at this time.
